One Week On, One Day Here

It’s hard to believe that A-Level results day was already a week ago. For those of us who went through it, the nerves, the restless night before, the refreshing of UCAS or emails, it already feels strangely distant, like a storm cloud that’s passed. And yet, today, GCSE students are standing where we stood, holding their breath as they open envelopes that feel heavier than paper has any right to be.

It’s a strange, bittersweet cycle. One set of results behind us, another set just unfolding.

I won’t pretend that results day is easy. It isn’t. Whether it’s A-Levels or GCSEs, the pressure builds up so much that it feels like everything depends on those grades. But here’s something that’s even truer: results are not the end all. They are a stepping stone. And no matter what letters are written on that page, they do not spell out who you are, nor who you can become.

I say this from a slightly easier place, because my results have already come through, and I’m happy with them. But even if they hadn’t gone my way, I’d like to believe I would’ve reminded myself that exams are only one path. There are always other routes, even if they’re unexpected ones.

If you’re opening your GCSE results today and you feel crushed, I want you to know this: grades do not define you. They cannot measure your kindness, your creativity, your resilience, or the laughter you bring to the people around you. They certainly shouldn’t take away the summer you deserve. Yes, the day itself might sting, but don’t let it ruin the weeks of freedom you still have left. The summer is yours, not your grades.

When I look at the sunset in the photo above, I see a reminder of that. The day comes to an end no matter what. Some sunsets are more dramatic than others, some softer, some clouded. But every one of them holds its own beauty, and every one of them gives way to a new day. Results day is just a sunset, it may feel overwhelming in the moment, but tomorrow is waiting, and tomorrow is full of possibilities.

So, whether you’re celebrating or grieving your results, let yourself feel it. But then, lift your eyes to the horizon. There’s so much more ahead of you than a grade on a sheet of paper.
