Music Keeps Us Together

The funny thing about music is that it tends to blow up our lives in the gentlest, most inconvenient way. One minute you’re scrolling aimlessly, the next you hear a song you haven’t thought about in years, and suddenly you’re having a full emotional flashback in the middle of your day. It’s that weird sweet spot between cozy comfort and a slap of memory you didn’t ask for but sort of needed.

You’ll see two strangers on a train, one humming, one pretending not to notice and then the beat drops, there’s this tiny, invisible connection hanging in the air. Not dramatic, not cinematic, just, there.

And that’s the bit people overlook: the awkwardness.

The wild part is that the past has no shame about barging in. A single chord, a chorus, even a weird synth noise from the ’80s, and suddenly you’re back in a version of yourself you forgot existed. It’s not always glamorous. Sometimes it’s sweaty clubs, bad decisions, or friendships that faded too slowly or too fast. Music doesn’t sugarcoat any of it, it just presses play, and there you are again, ready or not.

There’s this phrase people toss around, “music brings us together.” It sounds like something printed on a mug in a gift shop, and honestly, it is a bit cheesy. Not everyone can articulate love or longing or regret without tripping over their own words.

If anything, music reminds us that togetherness isn’t this postcard-perfect thing. It’s more like a beat-drop from a forgotten track that pulls you right back into the truth of who you are and who you share your life with whether you planned for that moment or not.

Because music doesn’t wait for the right mood, or the right season, or the right timing. It just shows up. And more often than not, it shows up exactly when we need it. Even if we only realise that halfway through the chorus.
